Have you spotted Chelmsford's newest Blue Plaque?
Have you spotted Chelmsford's newest Blue Plaque? Unveiled yesterday, it commemorates Dr Benjamin Pugh (1715-1798), a pioneer in midwifery and mass inoculation against smallpox.
Dr Pugh invented the large, curved forceps used by midwives and an early ventilator for babies who had difficulty breathing.
He once lived in 26 High Street, now RBS but formerly known as the Mansion House. This was one of Chelmsford's finest homes and had a double external staircase rising from the pavement to a grand first-floor entrance. Walk past it now and you will see a plaque in Dr Pugh's honour mounted on the wall.
