Swimming 100 metres for 100 years raises £1,126 for charity

South Woodham Ferrers Leisure Centre hosted a commemorative charity swim on Sunday 11 November that raised an impressive £1,126 for the Royal British Legion, on Remembrance Sunday. The event saw over 150 swimmers take to the water to complete a 100m swim. 80 members of Maldon Swimming Club also took part in the event and raised £400 between them.

Sue Humphries, swimming teacher, South Woodham Ferrers Leisure Centre, originally came up with the idea of running the charity event. She said: "We are absolutely delighted with the number of people who have taken the time to support this worthy cause. It has been a fantastic community event, thank you to all those who came to swim, who offered their support, or who just came down to watch".

The event included entertainment by local singers Josh Brough, Beau Langdale, Rita B, along with face painting and a bouncy castle for the youngsters. Visitors were treated to a WW1 tea party with vintage china and a selection of delicious cakes.

Tara Fisher-Harris, Pool Manager, South Woodham Ferrers Leisure Centre added: "We wanted to be able to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice of WW1 in a way which was inclusive of the local community, fun, and also educational. Alongside the swimming, we also displayed military uniforms, helmets, and back packs from WW1, WW2, as well as items from the modern army kit".

The South Woodham Ferrers deputy Mayor, Kevin Golding was in attendance and commented 'that it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon that raised money for a fantastic cause'.
