Chelmsford council clears tonnes of rubbish from A12 roadside in major clean-up
Chelmsford City Council has carried out a significant clean-up operation along the A12, removing tonnes of dumped rubbish from the busy roadside.Council street care teams were called in to tackle a large build-up of waste, with items including tyres, wood, metal and even sections of fencing discovered along the route. Images shared by the council on social media showed vans filled with collected waste following the operation.
The authority confirmed that around six tonnes of rubbish had been cleared during the clean-up, highlighting the scale of the issue along one of Essex’s busiest roads.
In its Facebook post, the council said the clean-up was part of its ongoing efforts to keep Chelmsford clean, but stressed that littering and fly-tipping continue to put pressure on resources.
A spokesperson urged residents and road users to take responsibility for their waste, warning that much of the rubbish appears to come from passing vehicles rather than local residents.
They said: “Our teams can’t be everywhere at once… we need everyone to do their bit and not drop litter, especially on major A roads.”
The council also thanked local volunteer groups, including litter-picking organisations, for supporting efforts to keep the area tidy.
The clean-up comes amid wider concerns about rising fly-tipping across Chelmsford, with previous figures showing hundreds of incidents reported in recent years.
Motorists using the A12 have previously raised concerns about litter affecting both the environment and road safety, particularly where debris gathers along verges and slip roads.
Chelmsford City Council is encouraging anyone witnessing fly-tipping to report it, as part of a broader push to reduce waste dumping and protect the local environment.
