A Liberal Democrat, Mackrory had dedicated more than three decades to public service in the region. He was first elected to Chelmsford City Council in 1995, went on to serve as Mayor of Chelmsford in 1999, and led the council as its Leader from 2000 to 2003. He later became Leader of the Opposition on the city council as well.
Since 2005, he had represented the Springfield division on Essex County Council, where he served for many years as Leader of the Opposition. He was a highly active member, contributing to numerous committees in roles including chairman and vice-chairman.
Colleagues across parties described him as a tireless campaigner, a respected and professional councillor, and someone who worked diligently for the residents of Springfield, Chelmsford, and the wider county.
Tributes have highlighted his passion for community service, his kindness, and his formidable presence in local elections—he had been actively campaigning right up until his death, hoping to stand for re-election on 7 May 2026.
Essex County Council and Chelmsford City Council both issued statements expressing deep sadness, noting the significant impact he had and the respect he earned from members and officers alike. Fellow politicians remembered him as a mentor, a dedicated servant to his community, and a fundamentally decent man.
