Speaking about the county’s transport needs, Patel highlighted the A12 as a key priority, describing it as a vital route for commuters, businesses and logistics. However, she expressed concern that upgrade plans have stalled, leaving parts of the road struggling to cope with increasing traffic demands.
The A12, which runs through Essex and connects key areas including Chelmsford, has long been the subject of proposed improvement schemes. These include widening sections of the road and upgrading junctions to reduce congestion and improve safety.
Patel stressed that without meaningful investment, Essex risks falling behind economically. She argued that better infrastructure would not only ease daily travel but also support local businesses, attract investment, and unlock housing growth.
Local drivers have frequently raised concerns about congestion and delays on the A12, particularly during peak hours. Business leaders have also pointed to the road as a bottleneck that can impact supply chains and productivity.
While previous proposals for upgrades have been discussed at government level, progress has been slow, with funding and planning decisions yet to fully materialise. Patel is now urging ministers to prioritise Essex in future infrastructure spending plans.
Her comments are likely to resonate with residents and commuters across the county, many of whom rely on the A12 for daily travel and have long called for improvements.
