In a statement released on 2nd December 2025, university leadership explained that a 52% fall in international student numbers at the Southend campus since 2021-22 had severely damaged the campus’s financial viability.
The decline in overseas enrolments — and the broader financial pressures facing UK higher-education — left the university with no viable alternative.
Under the plan, about 200 academic posts will be cut this academic year, and roughly 200 professional-services roles will disappear over the next two years.
The university says it intends to consolidate teaching, research and student services onto its remaining campuses — in Colchester and Loughton — to ensure long-term sustainability.
For current students at Southend, the campus will remain operational until the end of August 2026. Those whose courses continue beyond that date will be supported to transfer to the main Colchester campus. The university says it will provide additional support for the transition — including guaranteed accommodation offers and financial support where needed.
The decision has drawn criticism from staff and unions. The University and College Union (UCU) condemned the mass redundancies, calling the timing “cruel,” coming just before the Christmas break.
Some warn the move will damage the student experience and weaken the institution’s appeal, especially for courses that rely heavily on staff support — such as health, social care and performing arts.
Vice-Chancellor Frances Bowen said that although “these are exceptionally difficult and sad decisions,” they are necessary to secure the long-term future of the university. She paid tribute to the staff and students who have been part of the Southend campus, saying they “have and will leave a lasting legacy.”
As more higher-education institutions across the UK struggle with declines in international recruitment and rising costs, the closure of the Southend campus marks a stark example of the difficult decisions universities are now forced to make.
