Hundreds of Firefighters To Attend National Red Plaque Memorial Ceremony in Essex

06/05/2025 About 1 minute Share article:
Hundreds of firefighters from across the UK, Europe and North America are expected to gather in Essex this weekend for a major memorial ceremony honouring members of the fire service.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 9th, at the National Red Plaque Fire Service Memorial located within the Living Memorial site in Rettendon, near Chelmsford.

The ceremony marks the second anniversary of the memorial, which was created to recognise firefighters and members of the fire service community who have passed away, as well as those who have dedicated their lives to protecting the public.

Visitors attending the event are expected to include serving firefighters, retired crews, fire service charities, supporters and international guests travelling from Europe and North America.

The National Red Plaque Fire Service Memorial has become a significant site for remembrance within the UK fire service community. Ceremonies held there often include tributes, wreath-laying, speeches and moments of reflection for colleagues lost in the line of duty or remembered for their service.

Organisers say the gathering is intended not only as a memorial event, but also as a celebration of camaraderie and the shared bonds within the fire service across different countries and generations.

The Living Memorial site in Rettendon has increasingly become a place of remembrance and reflection for emergency services and community groups across Essex.

Local residents may notice increased traffic in the area throughout Saturday as attendees travel to the ceremony.
