The closure is scheduled to take place from 7pm on Monday, May 11th, until 5am the following morning, affecting the section of New Street between the A1099 Victoria Road and Waterloo Lane.
According to Essex Highways, the temporary closure is needed to allow contractors to carry out an upgrade to the road surface as part of ongoing maintenance and improvement works in the city centre.
Motorists travelling through Chelmsford during the evening and overnight period are advised to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for journeys, particularly as New Street is a key route linking several busy parts of the city.
Access for residents and businesses may be managed during the works, although some disruption is expected while resurfacing machinery is operating.
Road improvement projects such as resurfacing are designed to improve driving conditions, reduce potholes, and extend the lifespan of the road network.
Essex Highways regularly schedules this type of work overnight to minimise disruption during daytime traffic hours, although drivers are still being encouraged to check for diversions and temporary traffic management measures before travelling.
Further updates and traffic information are expected to be shared by Essex Highways ahead of the works beginning.
