Armed officers from the force’s Force Support Unit (FSU) were deployed to the city centre area following reports which prompted an urgent response.
During the operation, officers detained a teenage suspect and successfully recovered a knife. The teenager was subsequently arrested while enquiries into the incident continue.
The Regiment Gate area, close to Chelmsford’s busy shopping and restaurant district, saw a visible police presence while officers dealt with the situation. Witnesses reported seeing armed police vehicles and officers in the area as the incident unfolded.
Essex Police has not yet released further details about the circumstances leading to the arrest, but the recovery of the weapon has been welcomed as part of ongoing efforts to tackle knife crime and violent offences across Essex.
Knife crime remains a major focus for police forces nationwide, with officers regularly carrying out patrols, stop-and-search operations and targeted enforcement activity aimed at removing dangerous weapons from the streets.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Essex Police through its official reporting channels or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
Chief Inspector Sam Girdlestone, of the FSU, said: “It’s important the public understand that our armed officers in Essex are trained in a range of specialist skills.
“This allows them to patrol our roads across the county every day and respond to all manner of incidents.
“They are highly trained professionals who make hundreds of arrests every year.”
Inspector Matthew May, of Chelmsford’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Reports such as this are taken incredibly seriously and can have a significant impact on those affected, which is why we will always respond with speed.
“The arrest this morning was made in public and will have been witnessed by people passing by.
“I’d like to thank those members of the public who provided information to us, either on the phone or to officers on the ground, which directly led to this arrest.”
