1930s Chelmsford Gas Pipes to Be Replaced in Seven-Week Upgrade Project

10/06/2026 About 1 minute Share article:
Gas pipes first installed nearly a century ago are set to be replaced in Chelmsford as part of a major seven-week engineering project designed to modernise the local gas network. Upgrades are scheduled from 6th July until 23rd August.

The work will see ageing metal pipes, some dating back to the 1930s, replaced with modern plastic alternatives that are expected to provide a safer and more reliable gas supply for homes and businesses in the area.

Engineers say the investment is part of an ongoing programme to upgrade ageing infrastructure across the region and ensure the gas network remains fit for the future.

Residents can expect to see temporary traffic management measures in place while the work is carried out. Although efforts will be made to minimise disruption, motorists may experience delays and are being advised to allow extra time for journeys through affected areas.

The replacement programme is expected to take around seven weeks to complete, subject to weather conditions and operational requirements.

Modern polyethylene gas pipes are widely used throughout the UK because they are more durable and resistant to corrosion than older metal pipework. Utility companies have been carrying out similar replacement programmes nationwide as part of long-term efforts to improve network resilience and reduce the risk of leaks.

Local residents and businesses are expected to receive updates from engineers as the project progresses, with access maintained wherever possible throughout the works.

A spokesperson for the project said the upgrade would help secure the gas supply for future generations while reducing maintenance requirements on infrastructure that has been in service for decades.

Once completed, the work will mark the end of service for some of Chelmsford's oldest operational gas pipes, replacing infrastructure that has served the city since before the Second World War.

What Residents Need to Know

The project is expected to last around seven weeks.
Older metal gas pipes dating from the 1930s will be replaced.
Temporary traffic management measures may be required.
Access for residents and businesses will be maintained where possible.
The upgrade is intended to improve safety and reliability of the local gas network.

Residents are encouraged to follow any signage and traffic diversions that may be introduced during the works and to check for updates from the utility company responsible for the project.

Which roads could be affected?

Cadent has confirmed that works will take place on Broomfield Road and are expected to impact nearby roads including Kings Road, Corporation Road, Swiss Avenue, Westfield Avenue and Parkway. Traffic management measures will be introduced in phases, including rolling road closures and lane restrictions, with signed diversion routes in place. Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys while the seven-week project is underway.
