A Chelmsford man has been charged with attempted murder following a serious incident which left a woman with significant injuries.

Essex Police say officers were called shortly after 4.30pm on Saturday, 6th June, following numerous reports of a disturbance in an area off Regina Road in Chelmsford. When officers arrived, they discovered a woman who had suffered serious injuries requiring immediate medical attention. She was taken to hospital, where she remains receiving treatment.

Following an immediate search of the area, police arrested a 54-year-old man. Essex Police have now confirmed that Mark May, of Falmouth Road, Chelmsford, has been charged with attempted murder. He has also been charged with three breaches of a restraining order, assaulting an emergency worker and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).

Police said the suspect was initially taken to hospital for medical treatment before later being discharged and transferred into police custody. He was due to appear before Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Monday, 8th June.

Detectives investigating the incident have stated that they are continuing to build a full picture of what happened. Detective Inspector Luke Howard said officers received a number of calls from members of the public and thanked witnesses who had already come forward. He added that investigators believe the people involved were known to each other and that there was no wider threat to the public.

A significant police presence remained in the area following the incident while enquiries were carried out. Essex Police are continuing to appeal for information from anyone who witnessed the disturbance or who may have relevant footage.

As criminal proceedings are now active, it is important to note that the charge is an allegation and all defendants are entitled to a fair trial. A court will determine the outcome of the case.
