The basement bar at 59 New Street announced its closure on Monday 14th November 2022, bringing an end to six years of trading in the city centre.
Located in the basement of Waterloo House, Bottle Bureau gained a loyal following for its industrial-chic speakeasy atmosphere, laid-back music, and impressive drinks menu. At its peak, the venue stocked over 190 gins and offered thousands of possible gin & tonic combinations, alongside cocktails, craft spirits, beers, wine, and prosecco.
In their farewell message, the team expressed gratitude to customers, writing: “Sadly, the time has come to close Bottle Bureau for good. We would like to say how grateful we are for all the support our customers have given us throughout the years.”
The bar first opened in 2016 and quickly became a popular destination for gin enthusiasts, groups of friends, and those looking for a unique night out in Chelmsford. It regularly hosted live music and was praised for its friendly staff and hidden-gem vibe.
The closure marks the end of an era for this much-loved independent venue.
Many locals have taken to social media to share memories and express sadness at the loss of the popular basement bar.
