The acquisition forms part of the council’s wider long-term strategy to strengthen and manage parking provision across Chelmsford, particularly as the city continues to grow and major redevelopment projects move forward.
The Granary car park, located close to the Meadows Shopping Centre and within walking distance of Chelmsford railway station, offers around 180 parking spaces and operates as a long-stay surface car park.
Chelmsford City Council says taking direct ownership of the site will help protect future parking availability in the city centre while allowing the authority to integrate the car park into its wider transport and travel planning policies.
The move comes during a period of significant change for Chelmsford’s parking network. Several council-run facilities have recently seen upgrades, including the introduction of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems at multi-storey car parks such as High Chelmer, Meadows Retail and Townfield Street.
Meanwhile, other city centre parking sites are facing redevelopment pressures, including the planned closure of Rectory Lane East car park later this month.
The council has not yet announced whether any major operational changes will be introduced at The Granary following the takeover, but current information published by the authority shows the car park remains open 24 hours a day with payment available via card, contactless and the MiPermit app.
Located on Victoria Road, the car park is positioned close to a number of popular city centre destinations and commuter routes, making it a key part of Chelmsford’s wider parking infrastructure.
Chelmsford City Council says the acquisition reflects its commitment to maintaining accessible parking while balancing future regeneration and transport improvements across the city.
