The appointment was confirmed during Chelmsford City Council’s annual mayor-making ceremony, where councillors formally selected Councillor Foster to take on the ceremonial role for the next 12 months.
As Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Foster will represent the city at civic engagements, community events, charity functions and official ceremonies throughout the year, acting as one of Chelmsford’s key public ambassadors.
The role of Mayor is one of the oldest civic traditions in local government and plays an important part in recognising community achievements, supporting local organisations and promoting the city both locally and nationally.
Councillor Foster succeeds the outgoing Mayor following a year of public engagements across Chelmsford and the wider district. During her term in office, she is expected to attend hundreds of events, including school visits, remembrance services, business functions, charity fundraisers and cultural celebrations.
The mayor-making ceremony is held annually and remains one of the most significant dates in Chelmsford’s civic calendar, marking the formal handover of responsibilities between mayors.
Alongside the appointment of the new Mayor, the council also traditionally confirms the Deputy Mayor and announces the Mayor’s chosen charities for the year ahead.
Residents across Chelmsford are expected to see Councillor Foster appearing at a wide range of public events during her mayoral year, helping to support local causes and strengthen community connections throughout the city.
As part of her mayoral year, Councillor Lynne Foster has chosen Springfield Furniture Bank as her official charity for 2026-27. The Chelmsford-based charity supports individuals and families facing hardship by providing essential household furniture and items to help people create safe and comfortable homes.
Springfield Furniture Bank works closely with local agencies and community organisations to assist vulnerable residents across Chelmsford and the surrounding area. Through donations, volunteer support and fundraising, the charity helps people who may be moving out of temporary accommodation, escaping difficult circumstances or rebuilding their lives after financial hardship. The Mayor is expected to support a range of fundraising events and awareness campaigns throughout the year to help boost the charity’s work within the local community.
