The incident happened on White Elm Road, a rural route linking Bicknacre with nearby villages and roads towards Chelmsford. Initial reports from the scene suggested the tree collapsed directly onto the vehicle, causing significant damage and temporarily blocking part of the road.
Motorists travelling through the area experienced disruption following the incident, with traffic affected while emergency crews attended the scene.
At this stage, there has been no official confirmation regarding the condition of the person inside the car, although emergency responders were understood to have attended quickly following reports of the collapse.
The incident comes amid concerns over weakened trees following recent periods of wet weather and gusty conditions across Essex. Fallen trees have caused several transport disruptions in the county in recent days, including bus diversions in nearby Bicknacre after another fallen tree obstructed Main Road close to The White Swan pub.
White Elm Road is well known locally as a busy countryside route used by commuters, visitors to nearby garden centres and equestrian facilities, and traffic travelling between Chelmsford and South Woodham Ferrers.
Drivers were urged to avoid the area while recovery work and safety inspections took place.
