The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Lynne Foster, has swapped the ceremonial chain for cycling shorts as she takes on a 1,000-mile bike challenge in support of a local charity.
The challenge began on 19 July 2026 and will run for the full length of her mayoral term, finishing on 19 May 2027. Over those ten months, Cllr Foster aims to raise £1,000 for Springfield Furniture Bank — a pound for every mile cycled.
Springfield Furniture Bank is a volunteer-run charity that collects unwanted furniture and household goods, passing them on to people moving into a home with nothing — often after domestic abuse or homelessness. The charity provides essentials including beds, white goods, curtains and bedlinen to families and individuals rebuilding their lives.
The cause is a natural fit for Cllr Foster, who built her career in social housing, rising from managing hostels for vulnerable people to a director role at Chelmsford's Community Housing Partnership. She currently serves as a trustee of local almshouses and previously held the Cabinet role for Fairer Chelmsford, covering housing, homelessness and property.
Each year, Chelmsford's newly appointed Mayor selects a charity to support throughout their term. Cllr Foster, a keen cyclist, chose to combine her mayoral fundraising with a physical challenge.
"Springfield Furniture Bank is an incredible organisation that provides essential furniture and support to families and individuals who have little and no funds to buy essential furniture and household goods including bedding," she said. "The need for assistance has never been greater. Many in our community struggle with basic necessities, and Springfield Furniture Bank is a beacon of hope for those rebuilding their lives."
At 72 years old, Cllr Foster will need to average roughly 35 miles a week to hit her target by the end of her term. She's tracking progress via a popular exercise app, and made a strong start — covering 45 miles in the challenge's first week alone (19–26 July).
Residents wishing to support the challenge can sponsor Cllr Foster through a dedicated JustGiving page, with all proceeds going directly to Springfield Furniture Bank.
"I invite you to join me on this journey by sponsoring my cycling challenge," Cllr Foster added. "Your generous donation will help us reach our target of £1,000 and ensure that Springfield Furniture Bank can continue its vital work. Every contribution counts and helps us pedal towards a brighter future together."
